How the Draft Works

Rules of the 2016 Grid Draft

The 2016 Grid Draft order is below. It is a regular ordered draft. Teams will select their athlete in order from 1 through 8 for the entirety of the rounds.

  1. Los Angeles Reign

  2. Baltimore Anthem

  3. Miami Surge

  4. New York Rhinos

  5. Boston Iron

  6. San Francisco Fire

  7. Phoenix Rise

  8. DC Brawlers

All athletes regardless of gender and age are drafted in the same pool.

  • Only athletes who attend the Combine are eligible to be drafted. Exceptions can be made only by the commissioner.

  • Teams will have 3 minutes to select their athlete in each round of the draft. If a team does not make its selection before the end of the 3 minutes, the next team can begin to submit its pick, but the team whose time expired can still submit its pick at any point.

  • Drafting an athlete means that team has the exclusive right to negotiate a deal for that athlete. Both team and athlete agree to negotiate in good faith. They have until April 29th at 9 p.m. PT to agree to terms.

  • Teams and athletes have until April 29th at 9 p.m. PT to agree to terms. If they cannot come to terms by the deadline, the athlete is released into the draft pool and may be selected in the second supplemental draft, which will occur virtually on May 11. However, there is an important exception to this rule. If an athlete cannot come to terms with a team in more than one exclusive window of negotiation, they are removed from the pool of athletes in the draft and may not be signed to a team in 2016. They become eligible for the 2017 season.*

  • The supplemental draft on April 26th is the final opportunity for teams to select athletes.

  • All rosters must be final by April 29 at 9 a.m. PT, after which no changes to the roster can be made through the rest of the season. If a team does not come to terms with the athlete drafted by April 29th at 9 a.m. PT, they will not have another opportunity to fill that position on their roster.

* For further clarification, when an athlete is drafted by a particular team, they must negotiate in good faith with that team.

Free agents do not have to go through the draft, but they must be signed by April 29.
